Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

Activities

There are many ways to be involved with the Math and CS Department outside of regular classes. Please join us!

  • Department Seminar Series
Several times each semester the department invites speakers to give talks about mathematics or computer science that will be of interest to students.
  • Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
Contact Mr. Chuck Hommel or join via their home page. [Email] [Home Page]
  • Student Chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
See Prof. Martin Jackson for more information.
  • Computer Science Student Seminar
Learn about the latest advances and new ideas in computer science.
  • Mathematics Problem Seminar
Prepare for the Putnam Competition (a national mathematics competition for college students) by enrolling in this pass/fail seminar (Math 295). See Prof. Bryan Smith for more information.
  • Mathematical Contest in Modeling
Students in the Mathematical Modeling course (Math 471/CS 471) and the Optimization course (Math 335) compete in this contest every spring, and some years there is room for more students to participate. The Problem Seminar (Math 296) is a no-credit, Pass/Fail course used to prepare students for this competition. See a history of our teams or contact Prof. Mike Spivey for more information.
  • Thompson Hall Thursday Science and Mathematics Seminar
Interesting talks about mathematics and science, with speakers from on and off campus. Every Thursday at 4 p.m. in one of the large lecture halls on the first floor (often Th 124). Refreshments included! Schedules are available.
  • Budapest Semesters in Mathematics
Study mathematics in Hungary - several UPS Math/CS majors have gone on this program and thoroughly enjoyed it. See Prof. Rob Beezer for more information.
